Letter from ICANN Chairman Vint Cerf to GAC Chairman

ICANN

ICANN Chairman Vint Cerf has written [PDF] to the Chairman of the ICANN's Government Advisory Committee (GAC), Mohamed Sharil Tarmizi, proposing a special meeting of the GAC and the ICANN Board during the Board's upcoming meeting in Vancouver to discuss what measures can be taken to make our cooperation more effective, including ensuring the participation of developing countries:

Dear Sharil:

As you have no doubt noticed, during the current World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) a great deal of attention has been devoted to the role of governments in the process of "Internet Governance." Obviously, this discussion directly relates to role of the Government Advisory Committee (GAC) in ICANN and raises the question of how that role could be strengthened within the existing multistakeholder mechanism and made more effective.

Reflecting this situation, I would like to propose that we schedule a meeting of the GAC and the Board, distinct from the ICANN Board and CEO briefing to the GAC, during our upcoming Vancouver meeting specifically to discuss how to best address these concerns, and what measures need to be taken to make our cooperation more effective, including ensuring the participation of developing countries. I can assure you that the Board is interested to hear the ideas and thoughts of the GAC members, and looks forward to a positive and open discussion with the GAC and any proposals it may have.
