Open Registration of Top-Level Domain .Me Turns into Crisis

The .Me Top-Level Domain (TLD) Registry officially opened today for everyone on a first-come, first-served basis at 15:00UTC July 17, 2008. In follow up to the launch of this TLD, companies, organizations and members of the public where told that they can get a "Web presence that is truly personal, and have their new Web site working within minutes!" But apparently the process hasn't gone as smoothly as planed.

The .Me domain is based on the 'ME' country code for Montenegro which ISO 3165 Maintenance Agency assigned to the country shortly after it gained its independence in June 2006. In December 2006 Montenegro submitted its application to IANA for delegation of the .ME TLD and was later approved in September 2007, according to the organization in charge of managing this domain. On its website, the organization states that the "Government of Montenegro recognized the potential worldwide appeal that .ME could have and decided it should be operated as a generic name space to gain the maximum benefit for Montenegro."
