Oxford Internet Institute to Hold Forum on History and Future of DNS

This open public forum, "What's in a name? The History and Future of the Domain Name System," is organized by the Oxford Internet Institute and will be held at The Royal Society, 6-9 Carlton House Terrace, London, on Monday 28 January 2008, from 4-6pm (UTC). The forum will look at the history and future of the Internet Domain Name System (DNS). It will provide an opportunity to commemorate Jon Postel by looking back at the 25 year history of the DNS but also the 10 years of its management under ICANN; and a vision of what the future holds over the coming years.

The panelists will also review the 10 years of DNS management under ICANN and present their visions of what the future holds. The panel of speakers include:

  • Paul Mockapetris (Keynote), inventor of the DNS protocol, and Board Chair of Nominum
  • Lynn St Amour, CEO and President of ISOC
  • Markus Kummer, Head of the UN Internet Governance Forum (IGF) Secretariat
  • Mike Roberts, first ICANN CEO, and Managing Director The Darwin Group Inc.
  • Jonathan Zittrain, Professor of Internet Governance and Regulation, OII
  • Edmon Chung, CEO of .ASIA (to be confirmed)
  • Dennis Jennings, ICANN Board

The organizers have created the following video trailer promoting the event:

Further detail for this event is available on the Oxford's Internet Institute's website.

Sounds interesting (and a good excuse to see the Royal Society!). I'll be there.

Replying to my own comments here, but I went along yesterday and have stuck a quick write-up on our blog here: 25 years of DNS.

Haven't tracked down the video of the event yet, but we were promised it would be available…
