DNSSEC Industry Coalition forms to streamline implementation across Domain Name Registries

The DNSSEC Industry Coalition is a global group of registries and industry experts whose mission is to work collaboratively to facilitate adoption of Domain Name Security Extensions (DNSSEC) and streamline the implementations across Domain Name Registries. Members work together to establish a consistent set of tools and applications, shared best practices, specifications and shared nomenclature. DNSSEC Industry Coalition members include both generic Top-Level Domain and country code Top-Level Domain registries along with industry and educational experts of the Domain Name System.

".ORG, The Public Interest Registry initiated this coalition to encourage industry collaboration and streamline implementations for early widespread adoption of DNSSEC," says Alexa Raad, CEO of .ORG, The Public Interest Registry. "Encouraging the adoption of needed upgrades to the DNS infrastructure in the interest of the greater good is a core part of the .ORG mission."

In the Coalition members are gathered from across the industry to facilitate adoption and share best practices. Coalition members include Top-Level domain registries of .ORG, The Public Interest Registry, the .org registry operator; Afilias Limited, the .info registry operator; .SE (the Internet Infrastructure Foundation), the .se registry operator; EDUCAUSE, the .edu registry operator; Nominet, the .uk registry operator; VeriSign, Inc., the .com, .net, .tv, and .cc registry operator; and NeuStar, Inc., the .biz and .us registry operator. The coalition is also supported by industry security experts such as Shinkuro; NL Net Labs; Internet Society; Kirei AB; and Secure64 Software Corporation. With DNSSEC, Internet users know that their Internet-based communications such as web site visits and email correspondence actually connect to the parties they intend to reach. DNSSEC thwarts attacks such as pharming, cache poisoning, and DNS redirection that have been used to commit fraud, distribute malware, or steal personal or confidential information. For more information on DNSSEC, please visit DNSSEC Deployment Initiative.

"The DNS is the place where an attacker has the most leverage and DNSSEC could have a significant impact on thwarting attacks to the many and varied applications that use the DNS and the infrastructure itself," says Paul Mockapetris, the founder of the Domain Name System and Chief Scientist and Chairman of the Board of Nominum, Inc. "Digital signature technology is profoundly important to the future of the DNS, and having industry experts work together to test DNSSEC in production is the only way to reduce theory to practice."

Membership to the DNSSEC Industry Coalition is open to domain name registries and industry securities experts. Hailing itself as an action oriented group, it seeks organizations willing to contribute and support the widespread adoption of DNSSEC. For more information on the DNSSEC Coalition, please visit http://dnsseccoalition.org.

Alexa Raad, CEO of .ORG, The Public Interest Registry, has been chosen as one of the leading women in Washington business by The Washington Business Journal's fifth-annual Women Who Mean Business Awards. The Awards set out to recognize women across all industries and professions, and of all ages, who have demonstrated their drive and innovative spirit both around their work and in their communities.

Under Alexa's leadership, .ORG, The Public Interest Registry, who manages and oversees the .ORG Top-Level domain, reached over 7 million global domain registrations. .ORG is the third largest generic Top-Level domain following .COM and .NET, and has continued to grow consistently since PIR took over its management in 2003. Alexa has also positioned the .ORG domain as a trailblazer in the areas of Internet policy and security, being the first generic Top-Level domain to begin implementing DNS Security Extensions to make users safer from identity theft and cache poisoning. Additionally, Alexa has led the formation of a cross-industry group dedicated to solving issues associated with phishing and malware.

.ORG has continued to add value to its online community of registrants through the .ORG blog and Resource Center, fostering communal spirit and a collaborative nature as well as using those resources throughout the community at large to enable users to further their individual or organizational missions.

In her role as a CEO of a nonprofit, Alexa is dedicated to highlighting the work of organizations and individuals on a global scale who are working to inspire, advocate, and educate in order to change society for the better. The recently launched "World Voices" campaign is an example of the ways in which .ORG is achieving this goal under Alexa's leadership. Throughout her career, Alexa has held different positions in the Internet and Telecommunications industries. In her roles at companies such as AT&T, dotMobi, VeriSign, CyberCash, and Bell Atlantic Internet Services (now Verizon), Raad has consistently demonstrated her business acumen and ability to deliver results.

DomainPeople Lets Trademark Owners Register Their .Tel Domain Name Early

DomainPeople, Inc., the eighth official domain name registrar accredited by the Internet Corporation of Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), begins accepting sunrise registration for a new top level domain name (TLD) on December 3, 2008. .Tel allows people and businesses to offer a single point of contact and update their information in real-time.

".Tel is a completely new concept for the domain name world. It's a real-time business card that lets owners manage their contact information efficiently and conveniently," said Chris Kruk, product manager at DomainPeople. "This means no more mass e-mail notifications for revised contact details or job changes. Simply distribute your .tel address and your contacts will have access to all the information you want them to have. This is a great example of how technology can really simplify our lives."

.Tel owners don't need to create or manage a Web site since this is the only TLD that stores data directly in the domain name server (DNS)—making updates quick, efficient, and in real-time. The data is displayed on a standardized .tel page that can be viewed using any browser with Internet access, by entering a simple address such as YourCompany.tel or YourName.tel.

.Tel domain names allow owners to publish all types of contact information, including:

Phone, mobile, fax and premium numbers

Email addresses

VoIP access information

Instant messenger "handles"

Corporate (or personal) Web site URLs

Professional social media Web site links such as LinkedIn

Geo-location data (that is, street addresses and maps!)

Even keywords, for search engine optimization (SEO)

The .Tel domain also provides the ability to set privacy settings, controlling the type of information you want specific individuals to have access to. So you can allow your professional contacts to view a subset of your information, but give your friends and family full access.

Domain names will be granted on a first-come, first-served basis, so trademark owners should register their .tel domain names as soon as the sunrise period opens on December 3, 2008 to protect their brand integrity. Once the landrush registration period opens on February 3, 2009, trademark owners may find their names are no longer available. Sunrise registrations will carry a three-year term. Interested individuals can receive up-to-date information on .tel by expressing their interest on the DomainPeople website.

About DomainPeople, Inc.

GSMA Delivers Industry First in Carrier ENUM Initiative

The GSM Association (GSMA), the global trade association for the mobile industry, and NeuStar, a provider of clearinghouse and directory services to the global communications and Internet industry, today announced the successful completion of the pilot of their Carrier ENUM service. The service, recently branded PathFinder™, is now generally available to mobile and fixed network operators, carriers and related service providers.

Supported by Bharti, Lleida.net, mobilkom austria, SMART, Telekom Austria, Telecom Italia and Telenor, the PathFinder service pilot achieved an industry first by successfully exchanging international packet voice and MMS traffic enabled via a global, fully-interoperable deployment of Carrier ENUM, validating ENUM as an effective solution to IP-based routing and interconnection. The service automatically translates a phone number into an IP-based address, making it simple and transparent for users to initiate a wide range of IP-based communications via their existing phone numbers and handset address books.

"We found this trial tremendously useful in familiarizing ourselves with the practicalities involved in using ENUM. Cooperation between operators is crucial in establishing how to make the telephone number a universal means to link up with IP-based applications. A simple, standardized process will benefit everyone," said Napoleon L. Nazareno, President and CEO of Smart Communications, Inc. (SMART) and GSMA board member.

By providing mobile and fixed-line operators with a single routing mechanism, PathFinder simplifies and reduces the cost of delivery of a wide range of IP-based services to end-users. It will serve as a central 'directory' for all operators, and enables them to rapidly launch new IP services including packet voice, Instant Messaging (IM), MMS, email, and video, by facilitating the linking of an IP address to a phone number for mobile devices, fixed-line phones and IP devices.

"The successful testing of ENUM on Telekom Austria's next generation environment demonstrates yet again that the infrastructure is ready for commercial customer pilots. With the ongoing improvement in capabilities of our global GRX/IPX platform, recently enhanced by the Carrier ENUM functionality, we are able to provide best-in-class interworking solutions for mobile network operators," commented Boris Nemsic, CEO of Telekom Austria Group and GSMA board member.

Alex Sinclair, Chief Technology Officer of the GSMA added: "PathFinder will accelerate the rollout of innovative IP-based services that will be the key to ensuring profitability in tomorrow's industry. PathFinder provides a one-stop solution for operators to overcome the complexity of delivering IP-based services to communications devices. Furthermore, it helps mobile operators to cut costs and leverage their greatest asset: subscriber phone numbers."

GSMA and NeuStar also announced that Acme Packet and iXLink, a business unit of Telarix, have become the first vendors to successfully complete the PathFinder vendor certification programme, launched as part of the GSMA Industry Partner Programme earlier this year. The Partner Programme initiative is designed to foster working relationships with companies offering products and services complimentary to the PathFinder service, and provides certification of technology vendors, ensuring that PathFinder interoperability testing is available industry-wide.

Further Operator Support for PathFinder

"Bharti Airtel's participation in the carrier ENUM pilot programme paves the way for leveraging Carrier ENUM to create a collaborative ecosystem to route voice and data freely amongst operators. The GSMA PathFinder service will enable a far richer variety of applications and establish the telephone number as a universal means to link up IP-based applications on different networks globally," said Dr Jai Menon, Director, Technology & Customer Service, Bharti Airtel and Group CIO, Bharti Enterprises.

Sisco Sapena, Executive Director at Lleida.net, added: "This new service enables, for the first time, real convergence of services on a worldwide level. The GSMA Pathfinder Service minimizes the existing national barriers to real number portability. With this service, query methods will be much faster and more efficient, providing a better service for everyone."

New product designed to open the mobile Web opportunity to small businesses around the world

dotMobi, the company behind the .mobi Internet domain designed to help consumers find Web content that works on mobile phones, today announced the channel release of Instant Mobilizer™, a patent-pending service created to help small and medium businesses around the world reach their customers quickly and affordably through the mobile Web.

According to IBM's Institute of Business Value, 50% of global consumers would substitute their Internet usage on a PC for a mobile device, while 70% believe that the mobile Web has the potential to add significant-to-moderate value to their day-to-day lives. With Instant Mobilizer and a .mobi domain, tens of millions of small and medium-sized businesses can effortlessly interact with the 1.3 billion of potential customers connected to the Internet through mobile phones.

Without any need for technical knowledge or development efforts, Instant Mobilizer automatically converts a small business's existing PC site to ensure the best customer experience regardless of phone model or mobile carrier. Unlike other solutions, Instant Mobilizer gives users a branded, mobile-friendly site for their on-the-go customers, instead of leaving their Web site to be randomly transcoded by unknown operators or devices.

And every customer benefits from dotMobi's award-winning DeviceAtlas™ device database, which optimizes Instant Mobilizer sites using dotMobi best practices, so that every phone receives eye-catching results.

Trey Harvin, CEO of dotMobi, said, "Instant Mobilizer gives small businesses the ability to be literally in their customers' hands on a 24x7 basis, without the need for technical expertise or a hosting account. And given a recent Nielsen study that showed mobile Internet sites extend the reach of many leading PC-based sites by 13%Instant Mobilizer is a very cost-effective way to differentiate your website from your competition."

Harvin added, "Instant Mobilizer seamlessly integrates many dotMobi technologies with the .mobi domain, providing high value for web sites owners and users."

Sensitive to small business needs

Sensitive to the fact that that there are more than 27 million small businesses in the U.S. and two-thirds of all workers in Europe are employed by small businesses, dotMobi has designed Instant Mobilizer to meet the needs of small business owners globally with such features as:

Immediate, easy access to key Web site information such as phone number and address

Automatic links to Google™ Maps

Quick phone number links that call your business with one click

Unique access to key features of your customers' phones

Amy Mischler, dotMobi's VP of Identity and Brand Services, said, "In May of this year, dotMobi conducted joint research with marketing agency AKQA and discovered that customers want utility—not entertainment—out of the mobile Web like viewing maps, making restaurant reservations, checking schedules, and so on. Instant Mobilizer has been designed to meet these needs."

"One hot topic for the mobile Web has been 'discovery'—being found by search engines. Because the sites created with Instant Mobilizer use the .mobi domain, they are easily found by mobile search engines and thus by the customers that want to reach business, too," Mischler added.

dotMobi's Instant Mobilizer is being released via registrars basis across Europe and North America beginning in November 2008 and expanding to other markets thereafter. Domain registrars and resellers who have questions about deploying Instant Mobilizer may contact dotMobi's Director of Global Domain Sales Pinky Brand at pbrand@dotmobi.mobi.

dotMobi and .tel Are Complementary Domains: There is No Overlap

When the .mobi domain launched in September 2006, people quickly understood it was a Top-Level Domain (TLD) designed to locate mobile content in the same way—for example—that .se locates Swedish content or .museum helps users recognize genuine museum activity. In short, think "mobile phone" when you think ".mobi".

Now, the .tel domain is launching ... and people are asking, "Won't .tel help me locate content that will work on a phone—mobile or not? Do I still need a .mobi domain?"

The purpose of these two domains is very different. There is no overlap except in that they can easily work together to make content creation a bit easier.

To better understand, think of ".tel" as being shorthand for "telephone directory." The .tel domain allows users to put personal or corporate contact information directly in the Internet's Domain Name System (DNS), which then makes that contact information universally accessible. In other words, you update your information in one place and it then populates across every single place where you reference that .tel domain.

This is a unique application for a Top-Level Domain. Definitely, .tel does not act at all like other Top-Level Domains, where the DNS provides a mapping between domain names (like dotMobi.mobi) and IP addresses (84.51.242.25), so that users can more easily find content instead of worrying about the numeric sequence of the IP address.

In practical terms, this means you would likely use "MyCompanyName.tel" to create a simple "address book" style entry that would be repurposed across a wide range of digital media and traditional media as "See MyCompanyName.tel for ways you can reach us."

You use "MyCompanyName.mobi" as a way to tell your customers and prospects, "I have a site designed for your needs when you're on the go. This is where you come when you need information that meets your mobile needs." For example, "Where's the closest ATM?" or "What's on the 'to go' menu so I can order now and get it as I walk by?" On .mobi pages such as these, you might insert a link to MyCompanyName.tel so that your customer will always have the correct contact information.

Adding to the confusion ...

... is that the team behind .tel have issued collateral that indicates that they believe .tel is a good mobile solution because (1) it uses DNS lookups rather than pulling traditional HTML content and (2) that traffic generated by a .tel lookup is small, so that it's fast for consumers to access.

Given many of the things we've learned over the past three years, I can say that there may be some interesting mobile applications that can be done with direct DNS look-ups but it's not going to be related to a true mobile web presence unless there's a mobile web site involved. And more to the point, what business or brand wants its mobile web presence limited to its contact information instead of a robust, loyalty-building site offering the full interactivity and capabilities of the mobile web?

Will .tel be easy and fast for contact information? Absolutely. Is .tel available for rich content beyond contact information? No.

So, despite a second or two of confusion, I think it's easy to see how a .mobi(le phone) can easily work with a .tel(ephone directory)—and also see that there's really no overlap between the two domains.

Hostway Corporation, the global Web solutions leader, was chosen by the Cable and Telecommunications Association for Marketing (CTAM) to host video clips of the association's Summit 08, held November 9-11 in Boston. Hostway will deliver these clips using its patent-pending content delivery network (CDN), "Edge Caching."

"Hostway is proud to have been selected by CTAM as their CDN solution provider," said John Lee, senior vice president for Hostway. "Our Edge Caching service takes advantage of Hostway's worldwide network of data centers to deliver content over the Internet without the long wait times typically associated with online video."

Edge Caching is a system of servers deployed across four continents that operate together to deliver content via the Internet. When a visitor downloads a CTAM Summit video clip, Edge Caching will select the best servers in terms of proximity and traffic load and rapidly deliver the video to the end-user from those servers. With multiple servers working toward the same goal, Edge Caching drastically reduces the amount of time it takes to deliver the video clips.

You might have heard us talking lately about our plans to better serve the Small and Medium Sized business segment (SMBs). This group of (often times) locally run businesses has much to gain from the mobile Internet but faces time, money, and resource constraints—preventing them from creating their own mobile web presence. And unfortunately their regular websites are likely not meeting their customers' needs because they haven't been specifically formatted for mobile use. But do you still think mobile-specific sites are just for the big brands?

Well, what if "locals" could access a mobile-friendly website for their favorite pizza place to view the menu to place their take out order while on the go?

Or imagine someone commuting to work on the train and checking the gym's schedule for that evening's classes.

Consider a family driving around looking for a new house on the weekend and being able to view interior photos of the home and its key specifications—right from the mobile website advertised on the sign?

And what if a visiting tourist looking for an emergency dentist could read patient testimonials and find the office from a map?

All of these scenarios help consumers better manage their lives through utility and convenience which in turns helps to drive more business to these small and medium size business owners.

Once SMBs can deliver this kind of value to their customers and reap the rewards, the mobile web will be serving the mass market. And we're not that far away.

dotMobi has been hard at work developing an exciting product using the technology from our Mowser acquisition earlier this year to adapt traditional websites into mobile-friendly sites instantaneously. The product requires no expertise or maintenance from the site owner and does not require any additional hosting account. It's fast, seamless and extremely economical. (And of course, the product does require the use of a .mobi domain name)

We can't reveal all the bells and whistles yet but we're currently in an active beta phase with select registrar partners, with a full release coming soon. The introduction of this product promises to help end users better manage their daily lives using technology in their pockets, deliver additional and new business to SMB owners without significant time or cost, drive usage of mobile web to the masses and, of course, quickly grow the adoption of .mobi domain names to local businesses around the globe.

Watch out for more announcements soon but also keep your eye on your own community businesses… one of them might have your next favorite .mobi site!

.ORG, The Public Interest Registry is pleased to announce the next guest blogger for our DNSSEC FUD Buster series. Ram Mohan is the Executive Vice President, & Chief Technology Officer of Afilias Limited. Ram has led the strategic growth initiatives at Afilias Limited in registry services and security as well as new product sectors such as RFID/Auto-ID, global DNS and Internationalized Domain Names (IDNs). He joined the ICANN Board of Directors in November 2008 as a non-voting liaison from the Security and Stability Advisory Committee (SSAC), a Board advisory committee comprised of Internet pioneers and technical experts including operators of Internet root servers, registrars, and Top-Level Domain (TLD) registries. Ram will provide valuable information to our readers on the importance of DNSSEC.

I hear some talk out there that DNSSEC is not necessary. This is troubling to hear for someone in my role as a CTO in a technology company working on critical infrastructure. DNSSEC is an addition to the existing Domain Name System (DNS) protocols. It is designed to add security to the DNS by protecting the Internet from specific attacks, namely data modifications (a.k.a. cache poisoning) and traffic hijacking. DNSSEC adds origin authentication of DNS data and authenticated denial of existence. If you run a large or medium sized enterprise, are using or plan to use Service Oriented Architectures (SOAs) or Cloud/Grid computing, you depend upon having servers and services accessible and available—and that the RIGHT service provider will respond to your website and email traffic.

Without DNSSEC, users accessing your critical services hosted on a cloud somewhere can be hijacked and taken elsewhere without their knowledge or control.

Imagine having services sitting on a SoA platform, with access to these services being mimicked by a hacker who redirects your users and steals critical information and causes your organization reputational (and financial) harm.

The bottom line is that without DNSSEC, no website or email is safe from a potential traffic hijacking. Internet security researcher Dan Kaminsky proved it can be done in just a few seconds.

dotMobi, the company behind the .mobi Internet domain designed to help consumers find content that works on mobile phones, today announced that more than one million .mobi domains have been registered since its launch two years ago.

From October 2006, dotMobi has seen continued growth in the amount of registrants as companies pursue the increased visibility and targeted marketing the mobile Web offers. Mobile content consumption is steadily growing while the lack of consistency and navigation issues that previously hampered mass consumer adoption are lessening.

In June 2008, dotMobi issued joint research with AKQA, a global creative agency. dotMobi found that 90 percent of respondents were interested in learning about the mobile Web. Brands and companies far and wide have turned to dotMobi for information on building and marketing mobile Web sites for consumers looking to access content while on the go.

Sites such as Nokia.mobi, Mercedes-Benz.mobi, Zagat.mobi and Bank of America's BofA.mobi have been successfully promoted as custom, intuitive experiences for their users. These brands represent a small handful of the thousands of businesses who are embracing the mobile Web with sites across dozens of categories, including travel, automotive, consumer packaged goods, publishing and financial services.

The entertainment industry is also moving onto the mobile Web. Country music star Tim McGraw engages his audience via McGraw2go.mobi, where fans can download music samples, watch videos and keep tabs on the latest tour while followers of the Wu-Tang Clan can get the latest information about the group at wumusicgroup.mobi. Recent hit film Eagle Eye featured a special promotional "tie-in" site with US electronics retail giant Circuit City at http://ee.mydas.mobi as does the upcoming blockbuster James Bond film, Quantum of Solace, with Sony Australia at quantumcode.mobi.

Along with the .mobi domain, dotMobi as a company has continued to grow. To aid the expansion of the mobile Web, the company has created a wealth of free tools for developers, available at the mobiForge.com mobile web developer forum, which now boasts more than 20,000 members.

Public Interest Registry (PIR), has announced the formation of 'The Registry Internet Safety Group' (RISG) which is a global group of responsible Internet related companies whose mission is to work collaboratively to combat Internet identity theft. Even though RISG is uniquely Registry focused, it includes both gTLD and ccTLD members. RISG is intended to complement and not duplicate existing Internet security efforts.

PIR informs that other RISG members include domain registrars, security vendors and law enforcement agencies. RISG members and invited experts work together towards improving Internet security, develop domain name industry best practices and share data to improve overall Internet user security.

Charter members include .ORG, The Public Interest Registry; SIDN; Afilias Limited; Nominet; NeuStar, Inc.; CNNIC; Cyveillance, Inc.; Symantec Corporation; Shinkuro; GoDaddy.com, Inc.; MarkMonitor; Network Solutions; and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Members meet regularly to advance RISG goals and share best practices. RISG membership is open to all companies that agree to the RISG goals of security and corporate responsibility, and are able to contribute positively to the effort.

".ORG, the Public Interest Registry, initiated RISG to encourage industry collaboration and proactively fight Internet identity theft," says Alexa Raad, CEO of .ORG, The Public Interest Registry and elected Board Chair of RISG.

"With the vast and varied makeup of the group, we will be able to evaluate security efforts and best practices from many different aspects," says Roelof Meijer, CEO of SIDN and Vice-Chair of RISG. "I look forward to the benefit our mutual efforts can offer to the industry."

NeuStar today announced the successful completion of the trial of its SIP-IX VoIP Interconnection Exchange service with four competitive local exchange providers who are members of COMPTEL, the leading industry association representing competitive communications service providers and their supplier partners.

A detailed panel discussion regarding the benefits and technical aspects of VoIP interconnection will be held on Tuesday, October 7 at 11:00 a.m. at the COMPTEL Plus Fall 2008 Convention & Expo. The COMPTEL event will be held October 5-8 at the Orlando World Center Marriott in Orlando, Florida. Tim Cody, NeuStar's Senior Director of Product Management, who conducted the SIP-IX Interconnection Exchange service trial with the COMPTEL members, will be one of the presenters on this panel.

"We're glad to have been working with NeuStar during this trial," said Jerry James, CEO of COMPTEL. "Our members that participated in the trial have told us that NeuStar's VoIP Interconnection Exchange service performed exactly as NeuStar promised it would. We look forward to the next phase of this project."
The industry is witnessing an increased migration to IP-based networks, which enable operators to realize significant cost-savings and also provide a platform for new revenue growth through next generation services. SIP-IX enables the transition to IP-based networks by providing a scalable cost-effective solution for interconnection between services providers.

The successful trial included extensive testing of provisioning of telephone numbers and policy management. This policy control enables customized route instructions to optimize cost, quality and service capability, supporting new business models and relationships.

"We appreciate the opportunity to work with COMPTEL and provide innovative solutions to enable ubiquitous VoIP interconnection," said Michael Misheff, NeuStar's Vice President of Converged Addressing. "We are pleased with the results of this trial and we look forward to working with the industry to accelerate the migration to IP networks."

.ORG Talks with Dan Kaminsky on DNSSEC

The following post is based on a recent discussion .ORG had with Dan Kaminsky, a DNS expert best know for discovering a serious DNS bug (Website, CircleID Profile), about DNSSEC and how it is a critical step toward bolstering Internet security.

The problem, he said, largely stems from the fact that the Internet is more malleable than we'd like to admit...We need a universal identity system for the web, a universal place for people to put trusted information..." DNSSEC itself, which Dan referred to as a "technical issue that affect(s) the stability of the Internet," is a link in a much longer chain of processes, ending with the signing of the root, that will lead to enhanced security within Internet domains. As Dan mentioned in his comments supporting the implementation of DNSSEC, "Now, we're using the Internet to run our businesses. It should be the case that this bug doesn't matter; it should be the case that everyone has securely encrypted email and SSL certificates. Those are things that "should be," but it's not the way things really are..."

To this end, .ORG has been taking the first steps to create a more secured Internet for the .ORG community in order for them to pursue their business goals and impact the greater good without possible threats. Dan agrees, however, that the signing of the root is the essential next step in order to make DNSSEC a full reality. "There are established business relationships up and down the registrar/registry network...we need to leverage those relationships...once the root is signed and the top level domains are signed."

.ORG is the first gTLD to begin what Dan referred to as "the journey of a thousand miles," the process of implementing DNSSEC, and in so doing is working to move toward increased Internet security.

A recent article in Internet News that ran on September 26, 2008 by Sean Kerner entitled ".ORG - The Most Secure Domain? With a new effort for DNSSEC underway, security is front and center at the Public Interest Registry”, continues the dialogue and notes .ORG's iterative approach to the implementation of DNSSEC that includes the setting of key goals throughout the process based on a beta test phase called "Friends & Family".

Mobile development database from dotMobi will now include data from Sony Ericsson and Bango along with new enterprise support options

dotMobi, the company behind the .mobi Internet domain and mobiForge cross-platform mobile developer forum, today announced that the 2.0 version of DeviceAtlas—its award-winning mobile device database—is now available.

As previously announced, this 2.0 release moves DeviceAtlas from a "read-only" database to a "read-write" version with the introduction of a variety of technical enhancements, including automated phone capability tests, advanced search features and powerful graph options to generate insight into device data patterns along with the ability to download personalized versions of the database.

dotMobi has also received commitments for device data from a number of new contributors, including Sony Ericsson and Bango. Data from these providers has been adding to existing ongoing data updates from such mobile market-leaders as Nokia, Vodafone, Telecom Italia Mobile (TIM), Argogroup and Mobizoft.

"Less than a year after its introduction, DeviceAtlas has become the de facto resource for developers to use in creating device-aware content. That's why Bango is excited to join the ranks of mobile companies contributing device data to DeviceAtlas. By helping to get this information directly into developer's hands, we know that the quality of mobile sites will continue to soar and that the mobile Web will continue its explosive growth," said Ray Anderson, CEO and Founder, Bango.

Trey Harvin, CEO of dotMobi, said, "DeviceAtlas has quickly proved to be exactly what the mobile industry needed to help grow the mobile Web. DeviceAtlas is already the world's most popular mobile device database, with more registered users than any other similar product. And now, with the addition of data from Sony Ericsson and Bango, we have made the world's largest device database even larger, while improving the accuracy of the data with DeviceAtlas' unique community approach. Developers who build mobile sites using DeviceAtlas know that their content will work for consumers, no matter what their mobile phone is—even an Apple iPhone or RIM BlackBerry.

Enterprise licensing and support now available

While dotMobi will continue to offer free DeviceAtlas licenses to developers and extremely low pricing for smaller businesses, the demand that larger enterprises are showing for DeviceAtlas has led dotMobi to create special enterprise-level licensing and support to meet the unique demands of the largest Web sites on the market.

"We designed DeviceAtlas to be extremely affordable to even the smallest of developers and it will remain that way. But dotMobi has received an incredible number of requests from large corporate customers, who need higher levels of service, support, and licensing. To meet their needs, we've developed special enterprise-level licensing and support options," said Paul Nerger, Vice President of Advanced Services and Applications, dotMobi.

The new DeviceAtlas Enterprise License and Support Agreement will provide large Web-site owners with licenses that include unlimited site licensing of DeviceAtlas Premium Edition as well as higher service levels of support both before and after purchase.

More information on enterprise-level licensing and support options is available via email at contact@dotMobi.mobi. Information on DeviceAtlas 2.0—including the free Web-based version and free, fully licensed version for developers—is available at http://deviceatlas.com.

Hostway Corporation, the global Web services leader, has begun accepting registrations for the .Pro top-level domain (TLD) under new rules that extend .Pro eligibility to a wider global audience. Customers who sign up for .Pro domain names now can take advantage of Hostway's limited-time discount of $14.95 for the first year, and $34.95 for every year thereafter.

.Pro became available to professionals in 2005 under strict registration criteria that limited the domain, resulting in low registration rates. Earlier this year, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) approved a broader set of rules for .Pro, making it widely available to nearly all professionals across the globe.

"A .Pro domain name shows that the owner has proven their professional affiliation," said John Lee, vice president of premium services for Hostway. "We're pleased to be able to offer this indication of credibility to a wider audience of professionals."

Professionals registering a .Pro TLD must self-certify their credentials through a simplified process. To learn the specific criteria for self-certification of professional affiliation, read Hostway's .Pro FAQs.

The 70% discount on .Pro registrations is a limited-time offer. Professionals are urged to take action immediately to secure their name before all the best ones are taken.

dotMobi Announces Special Online Premium Domain Name Auction with Leading Auctioneer Sedo

dotMobi, the company behind the .mobi internet domain designed to help consumers find mobile-friendly content, today announced a special online auction for 200 highly desired premium .mobi domain names, including actors.mobi, bands.mobi, blackjack.mobi, boys.mobi, cellphones.mobi, doctors.mobi, games.mobi, homeloans.mobi, house.mobi, model.mobi, quotes.mobi, racing.mobi, stamps.mobi, vip.mobi and xxx.mobi.

As part of its ongoing series of unique methods of allocating Internet domain names, dotMobi is working with Sedo, the market leader in online domain name auctions, to launch the auction on November 5, 2008.

"dotMobi has seen the total number of mobile websites grow by eightfold since November 2007" said Trey Harvin, CEO of dotMobi. "The mobile web is truly coming into its own as a unique medium, and the names available in this auction will be key in helping consumers find content designed specifically for their mobile phones."

Tim Schumacher, CEO of Sedo, said, the incredible demand for .mobi domains during our last online auction with dotMobi caused the rare occurrence of technical difficulties. Recognizing how great the demand is for .mobi domains, Sedo has thoroughly addressed these technical issues to ensure the success of this highly anticipated auction, since it's clear that the .mobi domain has engaged everyone's interest in the possibilities of the mobile web."

The dotMobi Premium Names list is a set of more than 5,000 commonly used words that the dotMobi domain name registry set aside during its formation. dotMobi was the first domain company to offer selected names directly to the market via an auction process rather than a traditional "first come, first served" process.

Any company or individual will be able to bid on the Premium Names offered by Sedo. All participants must also certify their Sedo accounts to participate in the auction. The auction rules will follow Sedo's standard auction terms and conditions. dotMobi also has minimal requirements for the buyer, including:

A dotMobi-compliant parking page to launch within 10 days of the initial domain transfer date

Full web site with content relevant to the domain name within nine months of the initial domain transfer date

Web site to be compliant and to have a mobiReady.com score of at least 4/5

Notification to dotMobi in the event of a sale, and contractual bind for any new party to the terms of the End-User Agreement.

Full information, including the list of auction names, is located on the dotMobi web site at http://premiumauction.mobi.

Ongoing dotMobi Premium Name Compliance

dotMobi Premium Names sold at selected previous auctions held via Sedo and via T.R.A.F.F.I.C. also have attached content obligations. All bidders in these auctions agreed to the terms and conditions set out in the dotMobi Auction End-User Agreement, as will winners of the November 2008 auction.

dotMobi has recently communicated to winners of the relevant auctions the need to be in compliance and the dates that need to be met. Failure to comply with the terms and conditions may result in forfeiture of the Premium Name and bid.

To help the winners adhere to these requirements, dotMobi has launched a special microsite at http://mobicompliance.com with a variety of free resources that will ensure the domain name winners can easily deploy relevant mobile content.

World's Most Advanced Video Search Engine Leverages UltraDNS Suite of Traffic Management Services

NeuStar today announced that blinkx, the world's largest and most advanced video search engine, has chosen NeuStar's UltraDNS Managed DNS Services to augment the performance, reliability, and scalability of the blinkx network infrastructure and to take advantage of NeuStar's innovative suite of traffic management services.

Unlike other multimedia search engines that attempt to repurpose technology built for the Text Web, blinkx uses a combination of patented conceptual search, speech recognition, and video analysis software to efficiently find and qualify online video. Today, blinkx is the world's largest single index of rich media content on the Internet, with an index of over 26 million hours of searchable audio, video, viral and TV content, and more than 350 media partnerships including national broadcasters, commercial media giants, and private video libraries.

"Cultivating a user experience that's of the highest quality is a top priority at blinkx, and DNS plays a large role in ensuring quick and reliable responses," said Suranga Chandratillake, CEO and founder of blinkx. "We're pleased to work with NeuStar, whose UltraDNS Managed DNS and Traffic Management services enable us to access a powerful suite of global traffic management tools without expending additional capital."

By migrating to the UltraDNS Managed DNS Service, blinkx is able to benefit from the UltraDNS Traffic Management Services: SiteBacker, an advanced monitoring and failover service for critical enterprise systems and applications; Directional DNS, a geographic traffic shaping service that provides DNS responses based on geographic proximity; and Traffic Controller, a global server load balancing service that provides weighted load balancing of customer traffic across the Internet. These value-added services require no hardware deployment and, as with all UltraDNS Services, have 24/7 proactive monitoring and support.

"NeuStar is very pleased to have its UltraDNS Services contribute to the success of a true industry pioneer," said Alex Berry, general manager and senior vice president of NeuStar's Internet and Infrastructure Services group. "blinkx is the latest technologic innovator to value the importance DNS plays in their solution and the compelling economics of the managed services approach."

NeuStar will exhibit its UltraDNS and Webmetrics services in Booth #1410 at the upcoming Web 2.0 Expo in New York City (September 16-18). More information about NeuStar's UltraDNS suite of services is available at http://www.ultradns.biz.
