In preparation for some upcoming long-haul international flights, I was looking for some “light” ICANN reading material. One document that came to mind was ICANN’s 2010 Annual Report. Over the last four years ICANN has produced a year end report. While this document was probably originally conceived as a means to demonstrate ICANN’s progress in connection with its obligations under the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), it actually became a useful document for readers by providing a succinct summary of ICANN’s “State of the Union,” even for those that have attended over 35 ICANN meetings.
Hopefully ICANN will be posting this document shortly, or at least provide the community an explanation why they have decided to discontinue this report.

I see the 2009 Annual Report announced that the target date for the release of the 2010 report would be September 2010, so perhaps it is work in progress?

Well if there is no report available before my flight this weekend, I will just finish reading the Nominet Domain Name Industry Report 2010. I started to read this document on the way to Cartagena, although I never got to finish it. Kudos to you and your team on producing this report.

Glad to see the ICANN Annual Report is eagerly awaited! ICANN has not discontinued the report at all; in fact, we’re deep into the process of creating the 2010 edition. It just takes awhile to gather input from all departments, assemble it into a coherent narrative, and get all the required approvals.
We’re laboring diligently on the document to make sure it’s worthwhile reading. You’ll see it soon.

@Mike, from my viewpoint the Annual Report is done. However, it still needs approval from ICANN's CEO and Board. Quite justifiably, they are focused on the GAC/Board meeting coming up in Brussels, so I am unable to predict when they can turn their attention to reviewing the Annual Report. We're still pushing to get it out. BTW, it contains an extensive section on ICANN's compensation practices, including "your personal favorite section." (This has got to be the first time in my career I find myself "building buzz" for an Annual Report!) Scott
Thanks for the update Scott. We're trying not to get excited! The Annual Report is now c5 months overdue from its target September release, and the financial year end was in June 2010, c8 months ago. So, it would be great if it might be published as a matter of urgency. It seems odd to me that the 2011-14 Strategic Plan is due for approval in March 2011 but we may not see the report on 2010 before then. What is the schedule for the 2011 report?
I am painfully aware of how late the Report is. The tardiness began when a staff writer quit on short notice. We have posted an opening for a Publications Manager on our Careers Board at http://preview.tinyurl.com/34fdoam . If you know of a good candidate, now is the time for them to submit a resume/CV! For 2011, we are debating whether to stick with fiscal year reporting (thus, begin the report in July) or move to calendar year reporting (begin the report in Jan.). What's your vote?
Will send any good candidates in your direction (BTW, a Pubs Manager in the UK is a manager of a public house ie drinking venue!). My vote would be for an Annual report to be published as near as possible to fiscal year end, after audit. If the Strategic Plan process is on schedule (I would observe that this has also slipped last/this year), then this would help inform the strategic plan deliberations too.
Lesley, thanks for the suggestion; and thanks in advance to any other readers who want to weigh in on the 2011 Annual Report's timing. Re-reading my previous comment, I realize it could be interpreted to mean the Board is holding up the 2010 Annual Report. That is not the case, as it has not been sent to them for review yet. Past experience has taught me that sending a major document for review right when the reviewers are traveling does not allow them to focus on the document as they would like to. The Board will receive it soon; just wanted to clarify that they are not being slow at their duties.

Your update is much appreciated. As Lesley accurately pointed out the original target date appeared to be September 2010, so this lead to my initial inquiry. While I am eagerly awaiting this document I would like to request that my personal favorite section not be excluded, e.g. the compensation of senior management. Although ICANN’s 990 tax returns are due 3-1/2 month after the close of its tax year (June), since it almost always seeks a 6 month extension it is not until March that the community at the earliest sees the 990.
Thanks again for your diligence in replying to my post, it is always reassuring to see that ICANN is listening.

Great question, Lesley. We’ve decided to continue the tradition of having the Annual Report follow ICANN’s fiscal year. That means for the 2011 Annual Report, the reporting period covered will be July 1 2010 to June 30, 2011.
It also means ICANN will have a chance later this year to demonstrate that we can execute an appealing, professional Annual Report on time. ;-)
