I am a retired cybersecurity executive who, while investing in and advising start-ups, spends the bulk of my “work” time volunteering for cybersecurity related organizations. This includes ICANN’s Security and Stability Advisory Committee (SSAC) [Chair 2018-2023], being a Senior Advisor to the Messaging Malware Mobile Anti-Abuse Working Group (M3AAWG), serving the board of the Anti-Phishing Working Group (APWG) and participating in numerous other industry organizations. I provide occasional consulting and expert witness services via R2 Cyber, where I am the Principal. I also am a board member for multiple start-up companies.
Prior to retirement, I co-founded the cybersecurity company IID and was the company’s President & CTO prior to its acquisition by Infoblox in 2016. My particular expertise has been in the abuse of the domain name system by criminals. I am also an active participant in the Forum of Incident Response and Security Teams (FIRST) and a semi-regular participant in DNS-OARC meetings. Finally, I’ve been a long-standing member of the Advisory Board for the School of Engineering and Technology at the University of Washington Tacoma.
