About

Jon Farmer has almost a decade’s experience at UK’s leading wholesale communications provider, Entanet.

Jon’s interest in telecommunications started at the age of seven when, flipping through the phone book, he discovered it was possible to place international calls from the UK. With curiosity he called a number at random and was surprised to get the response… “Good morning, The Whitehouse”. He promptly hung up, thanking his lucky stars that itemised billing wasn’t yet available.

From this early introduction and a subsequent background in banking and online commerce, Jon now drives the development of Entanet’s voice portfolio, being particularly responsible for the development of its hosted VoIP and SIP trunking services as well as its traditional telecoms solutions. He is also involved with a number of leading UK industry bodies including ITSPA, ISPA, NICC and the UK ENUM Consortium.

IMP Continuing Despite Industry Backlash

Back in November 2008 a colleague of mine, Neil Watson (Head of Operations at Entanet International Ltd), published an article on Entanet's opinion blog about the government's proposed plans to centrally store records of all electronic communications throughout the UK. The Interception Modernisation Programme (IMP) will be the largest surveillance system ever created in the UK and calls for a 'live tap' to be placed on every electronic communication in Britain including telephone calls, emails and visited websites. more

USC: Solving the Digital Divide?

Darren Farnden, Entanet's Head of Marketing, has posted an interesting assessment of key parts of the report at opinion.enta.net. Given the content of Darren's article I thought it would be useful to post it in full here for CircleID readers... more

Will ENUM Deliver?

ENUM (E.164 NUmber Mapping) is a technology that has been around for a little while that has promised much and, so far, delivered little to the average user. As Nominet has recently been awarded the contract to administer the UK 4.4.e164.arpa delegation, I thought it was time that I put my thoughts on this subject down in writing. I'm going to cover the potential of ENUM in the telecoms industry and what it could mean to you, along with how it is currently being used and what potential security issues surround ENUM. more
