ICANN unanimously approved the creation of the new .Tel Top Level Domain (TLD) and awarded the contract to Telnic Limited.
"The .Tel domain offers the first genuinely different use of domains since .com was first created. Small businesses and consumers aren't the only ones enjoying the cost savings of switching to VoIP. According to messaging-security company Cloudmark, phishers have begun using the technology to steal personal and financial information over the phone.
Earlier this month, Cloudmark trapped an email phishing attack in its security filters that appeared to come from a small bank in a big city and directed recipients to verify their account information by dialing the included number. According to Level 3, a major long haul Internet Service Provider, Comcast has demanded a "recurring fee" when Level 3 hands off movie and other high capacity video traffic for delivery by Comcast to one of the cable company's subscribers. After a more than 100 year run, the end is nigh for plain old telephone service (POTS). Through most of recent history POTS was provided by monopolies, which were regulated at both the federal and state level. Once upon a time in a universe not very long ago phone service in the US was provided by regulated monopolies. AT&T was the big one and there were (and are) hundreds of small ILECs (Independent Local Exchange Carriers) around the country. These monopolies were regulated both at the federal and state level.
