The US Department of Commerce has expressed concerns over ICANN plans for the expansion of Top-Level Domains (TLDs). According to DOC, ICANN needs to ensure that the introduction of new TLDs will not jeopardize the stability and security of the domain name system (DNS).
"It is unclear that the threshold question of whether the potential consumer benefits outweigh the potential costs has been adequately addressed and determined," Meredith Baker, acting assistant secretary for communications and information at NTIA, wrote in a letter to ICANN.

The U.S. Department of Commerce is a lot like the rest of us — surprised how often ICANN can fall short of implementing even the best ideas. Just read the comments the proposed RFP has generated.
The introduction of new gTLDs is one of the better ideas the organization has had, but its roll-out has been unnecessarily messy. For my money, any opportunity for a company to either build or create greater affinity/community with its customers is a plus.
I hope ICANN can satify the demands of its own community and deliver on its mission. It would be a refreshing result of government intervention!
