Frustration, Aggravation, Emotion, Exultation - Day 1, at Munich's NewDomains.org Conference

If there is anything predictable about change it's unpredictability and disruptive technology. Think electric light-bulbs, telegraph, SOS messages and new TLDs.

There is no doubt that the new TLD round is about to change the way we think about the domain name system, language and communication. Nothing new there really because it's the same as sending telegrams and making phone calls but with the 21st century expectations of immediacy and responsiveness.

We can also expect failure. There is nothing in this process that will guarantee success and that is, in part, a result of the way in which ICANN has been constructed, about how the ICANN Board views its ongoing role and, most importantly, the willingness of the participants to take risks.

In a sea of unpredictability, the only thing predictable is that there is no other new TLD round scheduled (despite the best efforts of the ICANN Generic Names Supporting Organsation) and anyone who is thinking about applying for a new top level domain must understand that scarcity brings value.

This is the only predictable round, nothing else scheduled. Whether one likes it or not, that is the state of play.
