China Considering Internet On-Off Switch for “Emerging Social Security Events”

Reports suggest China is reviewing a controversial cybersecurity law to allow authorities to shut down the internet and block all communications online during a so-called “emerging social security events” occur. William Ide from VOA: “The new draft law, which is being reviewed by China’s parliament, the National People’s Congress, does not clearly state what it means by emerging social security events. The broad phrase could refer to anything from localized protests to widespread riots or violent attacks… How long authorities would be allowed to keep an internet blackout in place is unclear.”
