Packet Latency Big Issue in Internet-Based Applications,

Doug Madory reporting in Renesys Blog: "Packet latency is a big issue in Internet-based applications (i.e. the stuff in the cloud). In conducting analysis on Internet infrastructure over the years, we have seen many patterns of connectivity. One such pattern that can wreak havoc on latency is 'hair-pinning', a phenomenon where traffic takes an unnecessarily long physical path between two points on the Internet due to suboptimal routing. The increased distance results in increased latency, and the 'lag' or 'sluggishness' that users experience as a result can hinder latency-sensitive online applications whether they are financial trading applications or MS SharePoint." more»

US States Taking Increasingly Active Role Against Cybercrime

It's unclear whether cyber crime is increasing or simply being reported more often -- or a combination of the two. But as the number of cyber crime cases increase, state and local law enforcement agencies are taking an increasingly active role in investigating them. The number of complaints that individuals filed with the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) jumped more than 30 percent from 2007 to 2008 and corporate cyber crimes continues to make headlines. The FBI, nonprofit National White Collar Crime Center and Bureau of Justice Assistance jointly operate the IC3... more»

ICANN needs to strengthen conflict-of-interest policies for its board of directors, said Rod Beckstrom, CEO, in his opening remarks during the organizations 43rd public meeting in San Jose, Costa Rica. 2007 Security Threats More Targeted

With the new calendars freshly hung on the wall, an important question surfaces: What security threats are on the rise for 2007? It appears that the year will bring more narrowly defined threats or "targeted threats," which are different from what we've seen before. They are more focused on individual information as opposed to mass-mailing worms that are sent over the Internet to randomly infect victims. more»
