Australians Prefer .au Domain Names, Usage on the Rise

AusRegistry today released survey results of more than 3,000 Australians confirming that .au domain name registrations are on the rise, with 76% of all domain name holders choosing .au, an increase of 2% from last year. The survey also found .au remains Australia's home on the Internet with more than double the level of trust over any other namespace. more»

European ccTLDs Have Reached 66.5 Million Registrations, CENTR Reports

According to the latest DomainWire, CENTR's quarterly report, european ccTLDs closed August 2014 with 66.5 million registrations -- a net growth of 0.3% over the past 3 months. Widespread Compromised Routers Discovered With Altered DNS Configurations

A widespread compromise of consumer-grade small office/home office (SOHO) routers has been discovered by threat intelligence group Team Cymru. According to the report, "attackers are altering the DNS configuration on these devices in order to redirect victims DNS requests and subsequently replace the intended answers with IP addresses and domains controlled by the attackers, effectively conducting a Man-in-the-Middle attack." more»

France Protesting ICANN Over Approval of .Wine TLD

France has expressed anger at the organisation responsible for assigning internet domains over the planned launch of .wine and .vin addresses... France said addresses like .wine would put trade agreements regarding the sale of region-specific products like champagne at risk. French minister Axelle Lemaire said Icann needed to be more transparent. She called for a new general assembly to be set up to govern domain names, with a "one country, one vote" system. more»

Amazon Wins Bid for .Buy TLD at $4.6M

Amazon has beaten Google in a bid to acquire the .buy top-level domain. ICANN, the international Internet regulator, has awarded (PDF) Amazon the .buy domain after the company successfully outbid three other competitors in an auction. Amazon paid $4.6 million in an auction that ended on Wednesday. Google came in second place through its registry service, Charleston Road Registry. Google Becomes a Domain Name Registrar, Announces Google Domains

Kevin Murphy reporting in Domain Incite: "Google has announced its first foray into the domain name registrar business with Google Domains. The company tells me that the upcoming service will allow customers to buy or transfer domains for $12 a year.
