Australians Prefer .au Domain Names, Usage on the Rise

AusRegistry today released survey results of more than 3,000 Australians confirming that .au domain name registrations are on the rise, with 76% of all domain name holders choosing .au, an increase of 2% from last year. The survey also found .au remains Australia's home on the Internet with more than double the level of trust over any other namespace. more»

Total Domains Reach 280 Million Worldwide

The second quarter of 2014 closed with a base of 280 million domain name registrations across all top-level domains (TLDs) -- an increase of four million domain names or 1.4 percent over the first quarter of 2014 -- according to Verisign in its latest issue Domain Name Industry Brief. France Protesting ICANN Over Approval of .Wine TLD

France has expressed anger at the organisation responsible for assigning internet domains over the planned launch of .wine and .vin addresses... France said addresses like .wine would put trade agreements regarding the sale of region-specific products like champagne at risk. French minister Axelle Lemaire said Icann needed to be more transparent. She called for a new general assembly to be set up to govern domain names, with a "one country, one vote" system. more»

One of Japan's leading Internet services providers and domain registrar, GMO Internet, Inc., today announced the acquisition of the single-character domain name, Z.com for JPY ¥800 million (close to USD $7 million). CENTR Reports on Latest ccTLD Stats

The Council of European National Top level Domain Registries (CENTR) has released its 7th edition of DomainWire Stat Report with special focus on European country code Top-Level Domains (ccTLDs). According to the report, the top 20 largest ccTLDs currently represent roughly 82% of all ccTLD registrations globally and 37% of all domain names globally (gTLDs, ccTLDs etc). more»

Amazon Wins Bid for .Buy TLD at $4.6M

Amazon has beaten Google in a bid to acquire the .buy top-level domain. ICANN, the international Internet regulator, has awarded (PDF) Amazon the .buy domain after the company successfully outbid three other competitors in an auction. Amazon paid $4.6 million in an auction that ended on Wednesday. Google came in second place through its registry service, Charleston Road Registry. Kevin Murphy reporting in Domain Incite: "Google has announced its first foray into the domain name registrar business with Google Domains. The company tells me that the upcoming service will allow customers to buy or transfer domains for $12 a year.
