ITU Wants to Lower-Case the Word Internet

UN agency reconsiders its role as countries jockey for influence in industry... Approval of ICANN-VeriSign Contract Facing Mixed Reactions

News of the U.S. Department of Commerce's approval Nov. 30 of the deal between the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers and VeriSign was met with both jubilation and disdain by those in the computer industry.

"[The DOC is] respecting ICANN's authority and the contract it has made," said Steve DelBianco, executive director of the Netchoice Coalition. Netchoice is a collection of trade associations and e-commerce businesses, and has come out in support of the agreement. more

Price of .com Domain Names Likely to Go Up

Approval of the new .com contract between VeriSign and ICANN means VeriSign gets to run .com until at least 2012, and very probably indefinitely. In four of the next six years, the company will be able to unilaterally raise the wholesale price of a .com by 7%.

...VeriSign spokesperson Tom Galvin said that the company currently has no plans to raise prices, but added "pricing flexibility is important so registry operators have the means to invest in their infrastructure". more

ICANN Rejects .travel DNS Wildcard Proposal

ICANN said it has rejected a proposed search service to help guide people who mistype ".travel" Web addresses or seek nonexistent ones.

The decision comes after a review panel warned that the proposal from Tralliance Corp., which operates ".travel," could hinder spam filters and other applications that rely on the Internet's Domain Name System. more

US Department of Commerce Approves VeriSign '.com' Contract

The U.S. Commerce Department on Thursday approved a bid by VeriSign Inc. to run the key directories that keep track of the Internet's ".com" domain names.

The approval was the final clearance needed for VeriSign to extend its hold over the most popular suffix on the Internet. VeriSign reached an agreement earlier with ICANN but Commerce has veto power over ICANN decisions. more

NameMedia Acquires Afternic

Waltham's NameMedia Inc. reports it has acquired Florida domain name reseller Afternic Inc. …Afternic, which already has more than 1.8 million domains, will join with BuyDomains, NameMedia's existing domain name marketplace. more

Vint Talks About the Future of the Internet

As chairman of the board at Icann, Vint Cerf announced in 2004 that IPV6 was available for use in the DNS. But he admits that internet service providers have not progressed very far in its adoption. "The ISPs have not taken it up, and so we are reliant on governments to play a role. Some Japanese companies have taken it up, while the Chinese are driving it for the 2008 Olympics," he says. more

Domain Owners Losing the Privacy Debate

Welsh websites could soon choose a .cym address rather than .uk, if a campaign backed by assembly members succeeds. The assembly's house committee voted to support efforts to get .cym accepted as a top-level domain (TLD) name root on websites with a Welsh interest.  more

Microsoft has become an ICANN-accredited domain registrar, giving it the ability to sell domains directly to its customers. Microsoft has been reselling domain names from Melbourne IT, a registrar based in Australia that also provides wholesale domains to Yahoo and other hosting providers. more

The United States and China remained atop the list of countries spewing spam for the third quarter, U.K.-based security vendor Sophos said Monday, and the former had the dubious honor of extending its lead in the battle for spam share. more

Release of IE7, Firefox 2.0 Will Drive Significant IDN Demand

The arrival IE 7, Firefox 2.0 and other browsers that offer built-in support for IDNs could open the floodgates to IDN sales and usage. ...VeriSign says more than 600,000 IDNs have been registered in .com and .net, and that these names are "experiencing double-digit growth in new registrations and high renewal rates," according to its Domain Name Industry Brief published in August.  more
